After the flood Noah gave his three sons their inheritances and warned
Shem and Japheth to keep their houses together as unified people for the descendants of Ham would be a caanan (horrible affliction) and would need to be subdued by and made subservient to their descendants.

Depicted: Shem receiving Noah's blessing and the inheritance of all that was handed down to him with his additions, Japheth has been given wheat and a young olive tree while Ham has been given salt, symbolic of his descendants' city of Sodom.
